CASE STUDY
Elmgreen School, Lambeth
The Brief
The Elmgreen School is a 900 place new secondary school for 11 to 16 year olds located in the Tulse Hill area of the London Borough of Lambeth. The school was built under the government’s Building Schools for the Future programme and has the distinctions of being the first Parent Promoted School in the country and the first local authority school to be built in the London Borough of Lambeth for over forty years.
A central feature of the main school building is the incorporation of a ground floor “market square” which provides a unique open space in the centre of the school. This space can be used for a large number of teaching, social and circulation purposes and includes an area laid out as an amphitheatre, which leads into a large performance space, linked to state of the art recording and lighting facilities.
The school is a designated Humanities College and, due to its high standard of design and construction, has been nominated for a significant number of awards.
What we did
The new three storey building was designed by Scott Brownrigg and Adjaye Associates and was built by Carillion. jhai involvement with the project was from a very early stage of the design through to completion and we were able to work as part of the team to achieve a Regulations and Code compliant design. As well as Building Regulations advice we were called upon to provide specialist advice in the areas of Access for Disabled and Fire Engineering.
